When the creators of Central Park built the Mall, they referred to it as an “open air hall of reception”. It was specifically designed to accommodate passing carriages. Today it remains the only planned straight line inside the the Park and is reserved for pedestrians.

A quadruple row of American elms forms a cathedral-like canopy over the walkway. Being one of the largest and last remaining stands of these trees in North America, this is probably the park’s most important horticultural feature.
